Breaking news: Kiske solo album, Elvis Presley cover album?

2014/10/04: Michael Kiske to a Radio Program:

"I will probably do an Elvis record next year. Yes, there are talkings about it. Achim from Ear Music really likes the idea. I recorded several Elvis Karaoke songs and sent it to him. He really liked it so much and wants to do this album."

"I really like special songs of Elvis which were less successful. I just think there were some years when he was the best reagarding his personality and his voice. I also think he recorded the best songs in the years of 1969-70. There are known songs from this time like 'In the Ghetto' or 'Suspicious Minds'. These are good songs, but he recorded at this time songs which are stronger in my opinion. When I record such an Elvis cover album, I would choose songs that I prefer, independent from commercial success."

2015/05/01: Michael Kiske to Eurometalexpressshow:

"There is probably an Elvis record and I have been doing some Karaoke tracks I bought over iTunes for warming up. I’m always pressing the record button and I have done maybe like 80 tracks where I recorded all the Elvis tunes. Just for fun, it is not public and nobody knows about it. It is for fun and I sent the songs around. The reactions of the people were always very positive. Finally this is convincing since I do it with so much love for this type of music. The guy who is the production manager of earmusic, which is the record company of Unisonic, Achim, who is actually an old friend of mine, when we had the first meeting and it was him, I was actually shocked. I didn’t see him for a number of years. He heard the stuff and he is so much in love with it. He suggested making a record, like with a real band. If they want to do it and they may get some of the old Elvis musicians like James Burton the guitar player maybe, if they want to do it. Maybe we can afford him. So that’s one of the things I would love to do, like a cool Elvis record with my favorite tunes...

Information Kiske covering Elvis album

- In negotiations with EarMusic

- Album scheduled for being released in 2015.

Musicians

Sandro Giampietro will probably play the guitar.

I guess Kiske's friend Karsten Nagel will keep being the drummer and probably Fontaine Burnett will be the bassist. But in this point, are just speculations.

Fontaine told me in 2008 about the new album: "Michael has spoken to me about what he would like to do for the next album... and I think he'll let me play on the next one too :-) I can't say any more than that."

History behind

Since years and years there is the rumour that Michael Kiske wanted to do an Elvis Presley cover album, well, more than a rumour because he commented about it thousand times. The history even started after the release of the second solo album Readiness To Sacrifice. The history started even even release the second solo album Readiness To Sacrifice. Kiske said: "You know what’s funny? I’ve just remembered that back when I was still managed by Rod Smallwood, Iron Maiden’s manager… there was a discussion about recording an Elvis cover album. I told Rod that I’d love to do it… but he didn’t pick me for it. No idea what happened. It probably failed because I wasn't on it (laughs)" Some years later during Frontiers Records-era (2005-2008), Michael commented to fanclub: "Maybe I do a full Elvis-acoustic-album one day if a label is interested; I am sure this will be good. Elvis is in my heart, you know." So, it seems the moment has come.

6th solo album, previous solo work

After Kiske's Past In Different Ways solo album he started to think what could come afterwards. The first idea was to make an album more "mystical" like 'King Of It All', 'Longing', 'Do I Remember A Life?', 'Always', so he wantedKiske new album to try in that direction. Kiske: "The new stuff will probably be rather different, but I think there will also be some more mystical, more classical-sound elements on the next one..." one of thouse songs was released on the 1st album of Unisonic 'No One Ever Sees Me'. He also commented: "I would include electric guitars and the songs will have a more positive feeling, also with less melancholy than the previous solo albums." And with this idea he was working for a while.

A few years later, in 2012 with Unisonic close to release their debut album, Kiske commented the plans changed from that first "mystical" idea. He said: "I have decided to do that with Sandro Giampietro. We want it to be a very live record and a fun recording. I have a lot of songs which Unisonic didn’t care much about which I will be doing with him. We will try to give it a nice, live acoustic feel. I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be a very cool record, not so much for metal audiences but some of them are quite open too." At 2012 Summer, in the middle of Unisonic festivals tour, Michael had a meeting with Sandro Giampietro to start working seriously on the solo album.

After being working with Unisonic Michael started developing some kind of rejection of making another solo album alone, so he thought in Sandro Giampietro not only as guitarist, also as producer and composer. So the original plan changed again. Kiske said: "I'm very tired of producing records on my own. It's a lot of work and you're just in your own world. I just got tired, it took so much energy doing everything on your own... Sandro has a big house with good equipment there and everything you need to work professionally. Then, we compose together; I do vocals and guitars and Sandro records and produces the whole material, and he is also doing the mixing and mastering. He is better in producing and mixing than me anyway." In April 2013 he said: "Songs for the album were written in four days! That's how much creative we were, and I had never experienced it before. The creative process was so easy that I was convinced that we must complete the album." The second idea of making a album "live record with an acoustic touch" changed to a rocker album since Sandro became the producer. Kiske commented: "The next album I am doing with my best friend Sandro Giampietro will rock but also actually has a touch of U2 here and there from the guitars." In December 2013, Michael started to record the vocals for the new songs.

Frontiers records and first contacts with...

Michael Kiske still have deal for one solo record with Frontiers Records but they decided to change it for a third Place Vendôme album. Kiske had some ideas about how to release these new songs. He said: "I don't know the release date yet, as I don't want to release it around the same time as Unisonic. One option that I am considering is to release it on iTune one song a month, completely independent and free from any interference by a label." And here started the talkings with EarMusic which is the label of Unisonic. Since the team-writer Kiske-Giampietro worked they also keep working for Unisonic where they did three songs.

Elvis has joined the building

In October 2014, Michael confirmed on a Radio program he was talking with EarMusic about making a new solo album covering Elvis Presley tunes. "I will probably do an Elvis record next year. Yes, there are talkings about it. Achim from Ear Music really likes the idea. I recorded several Elvis Karaoke songs and sent it to him. He really liked it so much and wants to do this album." He also commented in that interview about which sounds he could choose for that cover album: "I really like special songs of Elvis which were less successful.

Michael already sang the following Elvis tunes: 'Blue Suede Shoes' (Helloween's Kids Of The Century EP 1991), 'Mary In The Morning' (Japanese bonus track in Kiske album), 'How The Web Was Woven' (Japanese bonus track in Past In Different Ways solo album) plus a lot of little versions live with Unisonic and Avantasia. Michael did an interview with Powermetal.cl where he shared two versions of Elvis 'I Really Don't Want To Know' and 'Love Letters' and he said: "I have some covers of Elvis, like Karaoke, I always does 'cause I love to sing Elvis, is so great for my voice!. I have about... 100 songs recorded!" So, we will have to wait for more information.

Rumours

michael kiske solo band tourGossip: Michael Kiske will do a solo tour with his own stuff to promote the next solo album.

Perhaps, is possible but very difficult. Kiske had some offers to go out on tour during previous solo albums but it didn't happen. The first time was with SupaRed album (2003) but Michael had serious problems in that moment with his stomach which a few months later had to be operated on.

The second time was with Kiske (2006) but Frontiers Records didn't want to spend money in that kind of promotion. Michael said: "I would love to play live again if I could maybe support a bigger act that makes music that could fit my new style too. I would maybe just play with my acoustic guitar together with Sandro Giampietro and his Fender. But it has got to be the right band or artist to support."

The third time was during the composition of Past In Different Ways album (2008), Michael said about it: "In fact, I had a very good offer of a promotor to do it, he even offer me since the first moment he realized I was making that kind of album. I would be free to make some kind of European acoustic tour but the problem is I don't want to return to the stage after 16 years having to sing only my old material, because it would give a wrong message... So when I return to the stage again, it would be better to do it supporting a new album and offering new songs, then if I would have the chance of including 'I Believe' or 'Your Turn' for example in the setlist, why not?, but now it's not the right moment".

So when Michael will release the next solo album after Unisonic album/tour probably he would have another chance to go out on tour. It would be more easy because he already retourned to the stage. But I really have doubts it would happen. Kiske is really focused in Unisonic and he would be also busy with Avantasia. I hope at least it would be nice promotion events. It would be great to see him with Sandro making some acoustic promotional dates for example.

Gossip: Jorn Lande could be guest on the album.

Jorn Lande wanted to do an Elvis covers album. In 2010 during an interview to promote Kiske/Somerville album with both singers Amanda said: "Jorn Lande is also a huge Elvis fan, he wants to do an Elvis album… he’s talking about it with Sascha Paeth!")
