Lost Avantasians - The Metal Opera-era
Currently is the turn of Avantasia so I wanted to write a blog related with this project band. Nobody likes to be rejected but that happens to everybody sooner or later so I will try to tell which musicians rejected the offer of Tobias to be guest in Avantasia and not only in the Metal Operas, also in the other albums.
During the Metal Opera, Tobias had problems with some vocalists who agreed to make this collaboration, but later didn't do it, for example Tarja ex-Nightwish, Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian and Daniel Zimmerman of Gamma Ray. Others rejected for time schedule problems like Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Zachary Stevens (Savatage), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) and Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath) who was out on tour. Tony Martin (Black Sabbath) didn't want to do it, and Eric Adams (Manowar) never answered.
Tobias commented about these musicians in different interviews: "I wanted Tarja, and she was planned, but she cancelled with a short note due to time schedule problems... Yes, I phone for example Halford and Dickinson. Mostly they told me time schedule problems as the reason for rejecting the offer (at least that’s what they told me)... Originally I wanted Ronnie James Dio as Pope, but at that time he was on tour and had no time for it. Then I tried to get the former Black Sabbath Singer Tony Martin, but he doesn't want to be connected to his Sabbathish Metal past anymore. But he wished me all the best and sent me a Black Sabbath autograph card, haha!... Hansi of Blind Guardian could not do it because he was working with Demons & Wizards and his band was waiting for him to work in A Night at the Opera... Daniel Zimmerman was planned to record the drums, but he didn't have time because he had to work with Freedom Call."

In the Spanish edition of Kerrang magazine, issue number 106, there is a copy of the letter that Tobias sent to Eric Adams (Manowar) to get his collaboration on The Metal Opera, here is an excerpt:
I'm Tobias Sammet, vocalist and main composer of the German Heavy Metal band Edguy. The reason why I sent you this letter is because during our last tour I started to write a fairytale (sure you know how easy is to have stupid ideas when you're bored on the tour bus). But after a while I realize it was not my thing to write books so I should write songs so I started to compose something like a Metal-Opera with a lot of guest musicians and a lot of vocalists with different characters. I've recorded the drums, the bass, the rhythm guitars and I got the collaboration of Markus Grosskopf (Helloween), Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray), Michael Kiske (the legendary vocalist ex Helloween who sang all the classics of the band like 'Future World', 'I Want Out', 'Dr. Stein'...) Henjo Ritcher (Gamma Ray), André Matos (Angra), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), I'm in touch with Zak Steven (Savatage) and many more. I cannot deny you're one of my favorite singers in the scene and I would love to get you in my album as a guest. The album will not be a shit, so you will not lose your good reputation. If you want to listen any stuff of my band you can contact with our company or ask Joey, he should know Edguy, because I've read some comments of him in a interview with Manowar.
If you're interested in joining the project (you would make me happy) and it would not be a problem with the recording. It will be more or less five-eight passages you have to work. I can send you the tapes and you can record it in any studio or I could go to the States, or if you have plans to travel to Germany in the next five months. Don't be afraid it will be 100% Heavy Metal of high quality and also Richard Wagner would love to listen it...
Lost Avantasians - The Scarecrow-trilogy
|Bruce Dickinson||Vocalist||The Scarecrow|
|Brian May||Guitarist||The Scarecrow|
|Blackie Lawless||Vocalist||The Scarecrow|
|Mille Petrozza||Vocalist||The Scarecrow|
|André Matos||Vocalist||The Scarecrow|
|Sebastian Bach||Vocalist||The Wicked Symphony & Angel of Babylon|
|Yvonne Catterfeld||Vocalist||The Wicked Symphony & Angel of Babylon|
|Tony Kakko||Vocalist||The Wicked Symphony & Angel of Babylon|
|Eddie Van Halen||Guitarist||The Wicked Symphony & Angel of Babylon|
For The Scarecrow album, we also know that Tobias tried again with Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) but he was busy and the same happened with Brian May (Queen), Tobias: "We were in touch because of Eric Singer as he also plays in Brian May’s band as well. When the track was ready, we sent it to him and he said that it was “a beautiful song but the vocals are so good that I don’t think I can do them any better and I don’t have the time.” I said, “Well it was not vocals we wanted, it was actually all about the guitar”. He couldn’t do it and it was just two weeks before our deadline, so it just didn’t happen." About Blackie Lawless (WASP) Tobias commented: "Blackie let me travel to Frankfurt and then let me wait eight hours and told me he did not want to do such things, what a disrespectful guy." André Matos was announced as vocalist for The Scarecrow album but at the end they had not time, but he was on the following album. And other vocalist was Mille Petrozza (Kreator), Tobias said in one interview: "After his collaboration in Edguy's Hellfire Club, at some point we had discussed this possibility. If I remember correctly, it was in the period of The Scarecrow album."
For The Wicked Symphony and Angel Of Babylon, Tobi tried with Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) who rejected the collaboration (you can easily realize which song was planned for him since 'Alone I Remember' of Angel Of Babylon album, it's very similar than 'Monkey Business' of Skid Row's Slave To The Grind and 'The Edge' of The Wicked Symphony album also sounds like Skid Row.) Toky Kakko (Sonata Arctica) rejected because his band was working on a new album. Additionally the German vocalist Yvonne Catterfeld was busy acting in a fairytale movie. Tobias commented about her: "Yvonne Catterfeld rejected to participate…yes really, she sings fantastic. She is able to song better than 999 singers of 1000 and this is meant for any musical style. It is important to recognize this. Of course all metal guys would have killed me for this. Hehe- new single ‘Lost in Space 2’ with Yvonne Catterfeld…But she was busy with acting in a fairy tale movie. The manager said-yes sure-but in the next 7 years it will be difficult and afterwards it will be the same." Tobias also tried to get Eddie Van Valen probably did not even get the request at all.
Lost Avantasians - The Mystery Of Time-era
|Jack Black (Tenacious D)||Vocalist||The Mystery Of Time|
|Yvonne Catterfeld||Vocalist||The Mystery Of Time|
|Jorn Lande||Vocalist||The Mystery Of Time|
|Bruce Dickinson||Vocalist||The Mystery Of Time|
Well, and what about The Mystery Of Time-era? It's too soon yet but we already have quite some interesting information about this subject. Tobias tried with Jack Black but he didn't get response. Jorn Lande was busy with his own stuff, he offered to sing in the album but he couldn't be part of the tour so Tobias decided to get other musicians. He also tried again with Yvonne Catterfeld and she agreed but her management didn't like the song 'Sleepwalking' and they requested changes, Tobias didn't want to change anything so it didn't happen.
Tobias Sammet commented about these vocalists: "I wish to have Jack Black (Tenacious D), but his management didn't answer, it would have been funny. I would also have liked Bruce Dickinson, but this time I did not even try, because I already knew the answer! I wanted a famous German Pop singer doing the female vocals on 'Sleepwalking' but her management thought the song was a shit and wanted to change it But there is not option to change my song for any artist. So I decided to keep the performance I had in the demo by Cloudy Yang which was excellent."
The Italian Fabio Lione is not a "Lost Avantasian" because Tobias never thought in him but a journalist asked for Fabio Lione (Rhapsody) and Tobias said: "That is a good idea for the future! I will think about it! Fabio is a well-known, very skilled vocalist, he doesn't need Avantasia. It's just that I've never thought about it in the past, when I'll have a passage that I think would be appropriate for Fabio's voice I should ask him, so maybe it's a good idea for the future!" Same thing happened with Doro, Tobias answered in the interview with Kiske fanclub: "I really like Doro, and now that you ask I do not know why I never asked her so far."
